Garage Door Spring Repair in Ventura

A snapped spring turns a Ventura garage door into dead weight. We size the new spring to the door, check the cables and drums it was holding, and test the balance before leaving.

Why did my spring break?

Most springs break from fatigue: every open and close flexes the steel, and standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles.

  • Rust. It thins the working wire and starts cracks at the pits. DASMA names salt-laden coastal air as a factor.
  • Wrong size. A spring sized for another door, or wound the wrong number of turns, wears out early or lets the door creep down.
  • Added weight. Paint, panels or add-ons make a door heavier than its spring was chosen for.
  • Doors left open. Long stretches open, and skipped lubrication where the maker calls for it, both shorten spring life.

How a spring replacement goes

Four steps. The door does not run under its own power again until the last one.

1

Describe it

Tell us whether you heard a bang, whether the door is up or down, and whether a cable is hanging loose.

2

Measure

Wire gauge, inside diameter, length and wind direction, plus the drums, cables and bottom brackets.

3

Price

You get the full price, parts included, before work starts.

4

Balance

New springs wound to the door, then a hand balance test and an opener reversal test.

Does salt air shorten spring life in Ventura?

It can, and the closer a garage sits to the surf, the more it matters. DASMA lists salt-laden coastal air among the conditions that shorten spring life, and federal coastal guidance says airborne salt is heaviest near breaking waves. The Coastal Commission puts the Avenue, Midtown and the Eastside entirely outside the Coastal Zone, so the city's coastal share sits around Downtown, Pierpont and the harbor and Keys. Two door makers also cut warranty coverage near salt water, one at 1.25 miles and one at 2 miles. We replace torsion and extension springs, cables, drums and bearings, and check every door we touch for rust.

Spring work

Sized, not swapped

A replacement spring has to match the door's weight and drum. Copying the broken spring repeats whatever went wrong last time.

Weighed when in doubt

If a door has gained weight, it goes on a scale with the springs disconnected, the way DASMA describes.

Cables looked at

A spring that let go often frays or jumps a cable on the way down.

Containment checked

Extension springs get a safety cable through each one, so a future break stays put.

Tested twice

A hand balance test, then an opener reversal test, before the job is called done.

Spring questions

Broken spring? Read this first

Door weight, one spring or two, and the state of the cables. You see the written price first.
Only if the door is already open and holding still. Do not use the opener to lift it.
A cable threaded through an extension spring, so a snapped spring cannot fly across the garage.
That usually means too little spring torque: the spring is worn, or it was wound short when it went in.
No published source gives a coastal figure. Standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles, salt air shortens that, and higher-cycle springs are sold for doors that run often.
Not for torsion springs. They hold enough tension to injure or kill, and DASMA says only a trained door technician should remove, adjust or repair springs, cables and the brackets they mount to. Extension springs are less dangerous but still need the containment cable put back correctly.
