Does valley heat change garage door care?
Yes, mostly for openers rather than springs. The Western Regional Climate Center's Ojai station averages a 91.5 F August high and a 35.9 F January low, about 17 F hotter in summer and about 9 F colder in winter than the coastal Ventura station. Genie advises against screw-drive openers where temperatures swing hard, so chain and belt drives make more sense up here. The houses are older and mostly detached: Census estimates put the median home in Ojai at 1971, with about three in four of them single-family detached. That adds up to many original springs, early openers and doors that have not been balanced in years.

Valley seasons and the garage door
Late summer
August highs average 91.5 F at the valley station, the season openers and belts work hardest.
Fall into winter
Santa Ana season usually runs October through February and peaks in December.
Winter mornings
January lows average 35.9 F, colder than the Ventura and Oxnard coastal stations.
Spring
May Gray and June Gloom mostly stay on the coast, where mountains hold the marine layer back.
Valley homes by the numbers
Census estimates count 3,467 housing units in the city, with a median build year of 1971 and the 1970s as the biggest decade (27.7%). About 74.5% are single-family detached homes, and about 59.2% are owner-occupied.
That is a lot of original door hardware from one decade, which is why we check spring condition and opener age on every visit.
