Why do garage doors wear out faster in Ventura?
Two things work against a garage door in this town: salt air on the coast side, and old houses almost everywhere else. Federal coastal guidance says airborne salt is heaviest near the surf and drops off over the first 300 to 3,000 feet inland, though faster corrosion has been measured 5 to 10 miles in. DASMA, the door industry's trade body, lists salt-laden air among the things that shorten spring life. Then there is age. Census estimates put the city's median home at 1973, and about one in five homes in the 93001 ZIP predates 1940. Rusted springs and tired openers tend to fail together.
Whole-door check
Springs, cables, rollers, hinges and the opener all get a look, because one failure often hides a second.
Springs sized to the door
A new spring is matched to the door's weight, drum and wind direction. Copying the broken one repeats the old mistake.
State opener rules
New openers carry battery backup. Every opener we service is tested for reversal against an obstacle before we go.

What did the Thomas Fire change for hillside garages?
It emptied whole streets at once, and every rebuilt garage there needed a new door, opener and wiring. CAL FIRE dates the start to December 4, 2017; the fire burned 281,893 acres across two counties and destroyed 1,063 structures. A city building official later counted 524 structures lost and 128 partly lost inside the city limits. The northern hillsides are still mapped Very High fire hazard, and where the state's wildfire chapter applies, the gap around a garage door is capped at 1/8 inch to keep embers out. We repair springs, openers, cables and tracks, and install new doors, across the city and the valleys around it.

Is your door balanced, or fighting the opener?
A balanced door stays where you leave it, and that one test tells you more than any noise does.
- The test: with the door closed, pull the red release handle, lift the door by hand to about 3 to 4 feet, and let go. DASMA's inspection checklist uses that same height.
- If it holds: the springs are carrying the weight, and the opener only has to steer.
- If it drops or climbs: the springs are out of balance. CPSC warns that a badly unbalanced door can fall on its own, so stop using the opener.
- Why it matters here: an opener on a 1970s house may be as old as the house. A door that fights it on every trip finishes it off.
Do not adjust the springs yourself to fix a door that fails the test. Torsion springs hold enough tension to injure, and DASMA puts spring, cable and bracket work in the hands of a trained door technician. Your part is noticing; ours is the wrench.
